When we talk about raising children, we look for answers in modern psychology and pedagogy. And yet many of the questions are ancient: who are we? What is our own path? How much does our family shape us? How can we accept our limits and free ourselves from the weight of the past?
Greek mythology and philosophy don’t offer scientific answers, but they tell, powerfully, of conflicts that are still with us today.
Socrates is associated with the invitation “Know yourself,” tied to the tradition of the temple of Apollo at Delphi. Alongside it, we can place another maxim from the same tradition: “Nothing in excess.”A Socrate è associato l’invito “Conosci te stesso”, legato alla tradizione del tempio di Apollo a Delfi.
For a parent, these two phrases can become a valuable guide. Knowing yourself means helping a child recognize their own inclinations, abilities, and difficulties, while also learning to accept their own limits. “Nothing in excess” reminds us instead that any quality, even a positive one, can become a burden when pushed too far: ambition can turn into anxiety, dedication into perfectionism, the desire to succeed into the fear of failing.
A child can love music without becoming a concert performer, football without becoming a champion, studying without being first in the class.
Fulfillment doesn’t always mean the greatest achievement. The value of a natural inclination doesn’t depend on coming first: discovering what truly belongs to us and cultivating it with dedication, without excess and without the constant need to prove our own worth, can be enough to give meaning to our path.
But to truly discover what belongs to us, it isn’t enough to be given a talent or to recognize an inclination. It also takes the courage to put ourselves on the line. A child needs to be able to try, make mistakes, change direction, and start over, without feeling defined by a single result.
The future isn’t born only from the abilities we already have, but also from our willingness to explore what we don’t yet know about ourselves.
Plato: rereading the family we were born intoPlatone: rileggere la famiglia in cui siamo nati
In the Myth of Er, at the end of the Republic, Plato tells of souls who choose the life they’ll lead before returning to the world. This doesn’t mean each of us literally chooses our own parents, but it offers something to reflect on: no one chooses the family they’re born into, and yet that family shapes them profoundly.
As adults, we can also reread the difficult parts of our own upbringing as part of our story, without this excusing any suffering or wrongdoing. We can recognize what we were given, what we lacked, and what we had to win for ourselves.
Family can deeply shape how we think, feel, and face life. It can pass down values, fears, expectations, and patterns of behavior. But its weight shouldn’t become a life sentence.
We can ask ourselves what, beyond our family conditioning, is the most authentic direction for our own life.
Our history shapes us, but it mustn’t determine us forever.
Raising a child doesn’t mean molding them according to a predetermined plan, but accompanying them as they discover who they are. Family can either support this discovery or get in its way, especially when it tries to impose on a child a destiny that’s already been decided: the career to choose, the character to have, the success to achieve.
Giving a child a future, then, doesn’t mean predicting it or building it in their place. It means offering them the confidence they need to face uncertainty. A parent can pass down values and tools, but must also leave room for personal initiative, curiosity, and the chance to choose paths they themselves never imagined.
Putting yourself on the line means exactly this: not waiting to have every guarantee before you begin, but learning to know yourself through experience as well.
Electra: when the past takes up all the presentElettra: quando il passato occupa tutto il presente
Electra belongs to a devastated family. Agamemnon is killed by Clytemnestra and Aegisthus; Orestes avenges him by killing their mother. Violence passes from one generation to the next, and the past never ends.
Electra lives in grief, in memory, and in the desire for revenge. Her figure raises a question that’s still relevant today: what happens when yesterday takes up all the space needed to live today?
In today’s families too, separations, resentments, and conflicts can draw children in. A child can feel forced to choose sides, can come to know details that belong to the adults, or can come to think that loving one parent means betraying the other.
Electra reminds us that a child shouldn’t be put in charge of keeping their family’s resentment alive. They need to know their own history, but also have the right to move beyond it.Elettra ci ricorda che un figlio non dovrebbe essere incaricato di custodire il rancore della propria famiglia.
Parents can tell their children what happened, but they should avoid turning the child into a judge, an ally, or the keeper of their own wounds.
They also need to be able to turn their gaze toward what doesn’t exist yet. To do that, they need to feel entitled to want things, to experiment, and even to take some distance from family expectations. The future begins when a child is no longer forced to repeat the past, but can try to build something different.
Socrates, Plato, and Electra belong to distant worlds, but they still speak to our own experience.
We can help our children know themselves without asking them to be the best; recognize the weight of family without turning it into fate; protect them from conflicts that belong to the adults; accompany them without claiming to decide in advance who they must become.
Raising a child, perhaps, means offering solid roots and, at the same time, the freedom to choose where to go. It means passing down a history without imprisoning the child inside that history. It also means learning to see in them not only what we’d like them to be, but what they’re trying to become.
Giving a child a future doesn’t mean guaranteeing them a life without obstacles. It means helping them develop the confidence they need to face those obstacles. It means teaching them that they don’t need to already be ready, already certain, or already capable in order to begin. They can learn by doing, they can change their mind, they can discover new possibilities precisely through the mistakes and experiences that test them.
The willingness to put yourself on the line is one of the most precious inheritances a parent can pass down. It isn’t the illusion that everything will go well, but the conviction that it’s worth trying, that a failure doesn’t exhaust a person’s worth, and that no single choice has to become a final sentence.
Ancient culture isn’t a parenting manual. But it offers us stories and questions that can help us see ourselves, and our children, more clearly: their limits, their wounds, their possibilities, and that personal direction which, sometimes, asks only to be listened to.La cultura antica non è un manuale per genitori.
Giving children a past means helping them know where they come from. Giving them, above all, a future means letting them discover, with courage and curiosity, where they can go.Dare ai figli un passato significa aiutarli a sapere da dove vengono.
