All children, sooner or later, have tantrums or behave in a way that puts parents in a difficult spot. In most cases, it’s a normal stage of development.

Behind a tantrum, though, there’s almost always something the child is trying to tell us. Especially in younger children, behavior can become the most immediate way to express a need or an emotion they still can’t put into words.

Why does a child have tantrums?Perché un bambino fa le bizze?

The causes can be very simple.Le cause possono essere molto semplici.

Hunger and tiredness.Fame e stanchezza.
A tired or hungry child tolerates frustration much less easily. This can happen, for example, at the end of a long school day or after a lot of activity.

Frustration.Frustrazione.
A young child often can’t yet explain well what they want or what they’re feeling. If the adult doesn’t understand, the frustration can come out as crying, screaming, whining, or a tantrum.

A “no” that’s hard to accept.Un “no” difficile da accettare.
When they’re stopped from doing something they want, a child can react very intensely.

A need for attention.Bisogno di attenzione.
Sometimes a child discovers that a certain behavior is a very effective way to immediately get an adult’s attention.

A desire for independence.Desiderio di autonomia.
As they grow, children want to try doing more and more things by themselves. Constantly being stopped from that can be a source of frustration.

Jealousy and sibling rivalry.Gelosia e rivalità tra fratelli.
Conflicts between siblings are common, especially when they’re close in age. The arrival of a new baby, too, can bring on jealousy and changes in behavior.I contrasti tra fratelli sono frequenti, soprattutto quando hanno età vicine.

More rarely, particularly difficult behavior can be linked to developmental issues or other conditions that make it harder for a child to communicate their needs, manage emotions, or tolerate certain stimuli, such as very loud noises or bright lights.

What should you do during a tantrum?Cosa fare durante una bizza?

The first thing is to try to stay calm.

Responding to a child’s screaming with immediate anger generally increases their agitation. It can help instead to acknowledge what they’re feeling:Rispondere immediatamente con rabbia alle urla del bambino generalmente aumenta la sua agitazione.

“I can see you’re really angry.”“Vedo che sei veramente arrabbiato.”

This doesn’t mean accepting any behavior whatsoever. A child needs to gradually learn that every emotion is allowed, but not every behavior is.Questo non significa accettare qualsiasi comportamento.

For example:Per esempio:

“It’s okay to be angry, but you can’t hit someone else.”“Va bene essere arrabbiati, ma non si può picchiare un’altra persona.”

As they get older, we can teach them small tools for dealing with anger and frustration: stopping, breathing, counting to ten, or stepping away for a few minutes from whatever is making them angry.

When a child manages to express what they’re feeling in the right way, it’s important to notice it and praise them for it.Quando riesce a esprimere correttamente quello che prova, è importante riconoscerlo e lodarlo.

Calm first, then explainPrima calmare, poi spiegare

This is a particularly important principle.Questo è un principio particolarmente importante.

When a child is in the middle of a meltdown, very agitated or angry, that isn’t the best moment for long explanations.

First we need to help them calm down.Prima dobbiamo aiutarlo a calmarsi.

Only afterward, once the agitation has passed, can we explain in a few words what was wrong with their behavior and what they could have done differently.

A calm child is much more willing to listen and understand.

Preventing some tantrumsPrevenire alcune bizze

When possible, we can try to avoid situations we know are particularly difficult.

For example, it can help to:Per esempio, può essere utile:

  • schedule certain activities when the child isn’t too tired or hungryprogrammare certe attività quando il bambino non è troppo stanco o affamato
  • give a few minutes’ warning before stopping an activity they enjoyavvertirlo qualche minuto prima di interrompere un’attività che gli piace
  • give them small choices, like picking between two outfitslasciargli piccole possibilità di scelta, come scegliere tra due vestiti
  • teach them how to ask for an adult’s attentioninsegnargli come chiedere l’attenzione dell’adulto
  • ignore, when possible and safe, behavior done purely to get attentionignorare, quando possibile e sicuro, alcuni comportamenti fatti esclusivamente per attirare l’attenzione
  • distract them or switch activities when you notice they’re starting to get worked updistrarlo o cambiare attività quando ci accorgiamo che sta iniziando a innervosirsi

One thing matters a great deal: don’t systematically give in just because a child is having a tantrum.

If, after every meltdown, they get what they wanted, they can quickly learn that the tantrum “works.”Se dopo ogni crisi ottiene ciò che desiderava, può imparare rapidamente che la bizza “funziona”.

Jealousy and sibling fightsGelosia e litigi tra fratelli

Sibling rivalry is normal and doesn’t necessarily need to be a concern.

It’s best to avoid comparisons and try to give attention to each child. During fights, when possible, it’s better not to automatically take one side.È preferibile evitare paragoni e cercare di dedicare attenzione a ciascun bambino.

Gradually, we can teach them to wait their turn, share, use words instead of shouting or hitting, and do some activities together.

It’s just as important to positively notice the moments when they cooperate, share something, or are kind to each other.È altrettanto importante riconoscere positivamente i momenti nei quali collaborano, condividono qualcosa o sono gentili l’uno con l’altro.

When a new sibling arrivesQuando arriva un fratellino

The arrival of a new baby is a big change.L’arrivo di un nuovo bambino rappresenta un grande cambiamento.

It helps to prepare the older child already during the pregnancy: talk to them about the baby, show them photos or little clothes, and explain, in words suited to their age, what’s going to change.È utile preparare il figlio maggiore già durante la gravidanza: parlargli del fratellino, mostrargli fotografie o vestitini e spiegargli, con parole adatte alla sua età, che cosa cambierà.

Reactions can vary a lot.Le reazioni possono essere molto diverse.

A young child may temporarily go back to wanting a pacifier or show other more babyish behavior. An older child, on the other hand, may be happy to take part in small tasks helping care for the newborn.

After the birth, it’s important to keep setting aside time and attention for the older child too.

Discipline is meant to help a child understand what we expect of them and what the rules of family life are.

It works best when it’s kind but firm and consistent.

It’s better to have a few rules, simple and understandable, and keep to them over time.È preferibile avere poche regole, semplici e comprensibili, e mantenerle nel tempo.

When a rule is broken, there can be a simple consequence directly connected to the behavior. If, for example, a child won’t put a certain toy away, the parent can put it away and not make it available again for the rest of the day.

In some situations, a brief pause in a quiet, safe spot can also help, without shouting and without physical punishment, to let the child calm down.

Once the moment of agitation is over, go back to the child, briefly explain what happened, and, above all, let them understand that your affection for them hasn’t changed.

When should you talk to the pediatrician?Quando parlarne con il pediatra?

It’s worth asking for advice when:È opportuno chiedere consiglio quando:

⚠ Talk to the pediatrician if:Parlatene con il pediatra se:

  • the behavior keeps getting more intense or goes on for a long timei comportamenti diventano progressivamente più intensi o persistono a lungo
  • the child hurts themselves or othersil bambino fa male a se stesso o agli altri
  • they seem very anxious, sad, or tend to withdrawappare molto ansioso, triste oppure tende a isolarsi
  • the problem significantly interferes with family or school lifeil problema interferisce significativamente con la vita familiare o scolastica
  • there are concerns about their developmentci sono dubbi riguardo al suo sviluppo
  • parents feel they can no longer manage the situation calmlyi genitori sentono di non riuscire più a gestire serenamente la situazione

Asking for help doesn’t necessarily mean the child has a problem. Sometimes it’s simply a matter of better understanding what they’re trying to tell us through their behavior, and finding a more effective way to respond together.
